Why the Zebra?

The zebra is the recognised symbol for rare diseases and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). In medical training, doctors are often taught the phrase “when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras” meaning to look for the most common explanation first. While this can be helpful, it can also mean rare conditions are missed or dismissed.

Zebras remind us that rare conditions do exist. Every zebra has unique stripes, just as every person’s experience with disability or chronic illness is different. Symptoms may look different from one person to the next, but that does not make them any less real. The zebra helps raise awareness, encourage understanding, and remind people that being different does not mean being invisible.
