Whether we realise it or not, nothing is more honest than: “All behaviour is a form of communication”. This is especially true when it comes to disabilities. For too long many with disability have been slapped with a label of “displaying behaviours”. This is used + often weaponised against people who are not responding how medical or support staff would want someone to respond. But more often than not, many of the earlier attempts at communicating struggles or becoming overwhelmed has been overlooked or not identified. Anyone of us at all can be pushed to “displaying behaviours” if we are pushed to that being all we have left, or if we don’t know how to deal with any of our overwhelming feelings building up inside. We need people around to help take stock of this, and read the earlier communication to support our needs. We are not “naughty”. How do you respond when you are not being heard, or if you are not understanding what is going on in your circumstances, or feel overwhelmed, or overstimulated? What happens to you when you have no control in your own decisions or choices…? How do we support empowered decision making and the ability to have say, and control in one’s own life? 

All forms of behaviours are forms of communication. It’s up to us to learn that, to identify it and support each other to work out & understand why behaviours is being displayed and how we can navigate it ahead.
