How to Use the Foil Medication Packet Opener
1. Hold the packet flat on a table or steady surface. Make sure the foil packet you want to open is facing up.
2. Place the opener at the corner or edge of the packet. Slide the circular cutting wheel gently under the edge of the foil.
3. Squeeze the handles together. The blade will glide through the foil as you squeeze, cutting cleanly around the perimeter of the packet.
4. Rotate or reposition as needed. Continue cutting around the edge until the section opens easily. You can lift one side of the foil to remove your medication.
5. Wipe clean after each use. Use a soft cloth or sanitising wipe to keep it clean and ready for next time.
Please Note: Video example and step by step photos with the foil are coming and will be uploaded shortly.
Tips:
⚡️Works best when the packet is placed on a firm surface for stability.
⚡️Apply light, steady pressure — you don’t need to force it.
⚡️Store in an easy-to-reach place near your regular medication supplies.
⚡️Not suitable for blister pop-out packs or paper sachets — only foil-sealed medication packets.
Accessibility note: Designed to reduce strain for people with arthritis, tremors, fine-motor difficulties, or limited hand strength, helping make medication access easier and safer.
The Story Behind the Tool
In 2024, Fair Go (TVNZ 1) highlighted the struggle many New Zealanders were facing after the manufacturer of Lamictel changed their packaging, switching to a new foil-sealed design that was almost impossible for many people with disabilities, chronic pain, or reduced dexterity to open.
When Fair Go approached OTNZ (Occupational Therapy New Zealand) for advice, they recommended Kylee & Co and our range of adaptive products.
We were able to make one of our existing tools work well enough to help in the short term, but we knew that wasn’t good enough. People needed a proper, long-term solution. So, working with one of our incredible Kylee & Co innovators, we set about designing a custom-made opener built specifically for foil medication packets.
After the episode aired, we were blown away by the number of people who reached out to us, all sharing the same challenge. That response reinforced what we’ve always believed: accessibility design isn’t about convenience; it’s about restoring independence and dignity in everyday life.
From one story to a nationwide need, this tool represents exactly what Kylee & Co stands for: community, innovation, and real-world change.
